Food fetish

fasta gimme a pasta! Waldorf - my fav salad brownie - yummmmmm!
I'm a real foodie! Thank Tushita my body doesn't show it, probably due to all the recent impromptu diets. Healthy living via healthy eating is my motto nowadays unlike before, being "Live to eat, not eat to live!". Gone are the days that I used to stuff my face with bak kut teh or chicken-rice-ball whenever I had invitations from friends who would find any excuse to binge on food on the pretext of "brotherhood bonding".
In the past, my voracious appetite would have me trying out new places in KL and PJ. Jap, Italian, German, Turkish.... you name it, I would most probably have tried most of them, if not all. There were a few places which I made sure to frequent as well i.e RamaV (Thai), Ciao (Italian) and Moussandra (Mediterranean), Pudu (delicious local roast goose) which often bore a hole in my wallet.

Probably , it's my karma too to have come across flocks of friends (do you say "flock" when it applies to vultures as well? haha) who would really go out of the way to hunt for best food spots. A husband of my friend, Evelyn, kinda even has a fetish for "anything fishhead" (fishhead curry, steamed fishhead with ginger, grilled salmon head .... ) and would travel to faraway places just to satify his cravings. Whoever my food-dates were; would be assured to put on kilos as I would make sure they were well-fed and shared my passion for food. It was almost orgasmic whenever I see them gorging on every morsel and licking their fingers after that. My last outing with a friend to Carey Island Seafood was especially memorable as I even forgot to eat at times; watching "the vulture" haha! carefully picking every little bit of crabmeat found. It was a real joy, sorta like being in a meditative state of mind.

Somehow too, my enjoyment has also migrated to being hooked on Astro's AFC (Asian food channel, well not really Asian coz they even have Scandinavian cookshows). Who knows how these things happen? But they happen fast. One minute, I'm watching CSI, the next minute I'm clicking over to Jamie Oliver rubbing a herb mixture into a pork loin.

Part of the reason I watch AFC is that I seem to identify with their trance-like passion in getting excited over food.

The other day, for instance, I watched Nigella pound a cut of veal with a mallet, a pure look of bliss on her face. "It's really fun!" she chirped at one point. It nearly made me wanna raid the fridge and cook up some roast pork myself.

It's not only about cooking food, but even food competitions nowadays. It was rather funny to watch Oprah suck-in her lips when the Oprah show organised a "best sandwich" competition which saw the grand being US7k worth of stainless steel designer kitchenware.

There are also a lot of foodie rock star celebs nowadays raking in tonnes of $$$ from their cookshows. But I'm particularly drawn the foul-mouthed Gordon Ramsey who has managed to syndicate 3 highly successful cook shows. Despite his obscene behavior, people seem to be drawn to his shows and also to his eateries in London; paying upto 200 Euros for a 3-coursed meal per pax.

Another thing I noticed about AFC is that everything tasted is almost always followed by an enthusiastic response of "Terrific!", "Delicious!" or "Fabulous!". I even remembered having watched a program whereby I expected a food critic to spit nasty-looking fried green tomatoes in cajun mayo across the room, but instead, simply pronounced "That's fantastic!"

Well, I have a great sense of feeling that many other Malaysians share my passion too; judging from the mushrooming of eateries especially in Klang Valley. It's not difficult at all to find a Japanese or Italian eatery just about anywhere and everywhere. Even more exotic menus eg. Moroccan, Argentinian (steakhouses) could be found.
