- They don't ask us to name them.
- They don't ask us to worry about them.
- They don't ask us to feed them.
- They don't ask us to miss them.
- They don't ask us to unconditionally nor conditionally love them.
- They don't ask us to grieve them when they die.
- They don't ask us to bury them.
- They don't ask us for memorial markers to be planted on their burial plot.
A lot of us do this anyway, for our domestic pets and the occasional stray or wild friend. (Remembering KeenYee's blog on his colleague's mishap with a bird)
I don't believe in fairy tales, I don't believe in the so-called "Rainbow Bridge", nor do I believe that we compromise - at least for strays and wild animals - anything but entirely optional encounters in their lives. And I do believe that we humans are the fortunate ones when our paths cross with theirs, however, if only for brief moments. That is why we should remember our fortunate lives and treat them with a lil' compassion and care, more so especially when we encounter the distressed ones.
I remembered having read a poem "The Heaven Of Animals" http://www.poetryoutloud.org/poems/poem.html?id=171425 by James Dickey and did not agree about the part that animals having no souls. I believe, that far from being soulless, they are the essence of soul on this planet. Thus, I chose to drop the words "no soul" and replace it with "fine souls".
To the little stray that I encountered outside my home early this morning, I pray and hope our future moments together will not be brief and uneventful, but be mutually satisfactory ones, just as with the other lil' friends under my care.
And you do not have to ask, my new little-furried-friend, for I will gladly perform.

Fable ~ Yup, He's the odd looking one. His 6 other siblings are perfect-looking miniature pinschers. I chose to keep him over the others coz he DID remind me of Scrappy too :)

I often compare my friends with dogs coz I told them dogs are more loyal and obedient. They never betray their masters too. Twilight and his firelava mouth as usual.

I disagree with point no. 3. My Pumpkin (the Pekingnese) barks at me furiously every night at 8p.m. and lead me to kitchen cos it's his dinner time. Who said they don't ask??
Precious ~ "ask" is not from a literal sense. The approach to the meaning is related to how we human beings have taken to the task of making it our responsibility; whether out of a sense of duty, or compassion or any other reason. ^_^
