It 's the time of year again, where even health-conscious gymmers are temporarily released from the gated bonds of health-foodie hell to give in to their cravings and tuck into the yummylicious bamboo leaf-wrapped pyramids.Today is the 5th day of the 5th month in the chinese calendar, marking the day where the chinese remember more of satisfying their yearly cravings for "yok chung" or "bak chang" rather than in rememberance of the goverment official cum patriotic poet, Quan Yu from the ancient Chu dynasty, who sacrificed his life in the name of upholding justice.
Wooooo.... that beautiful piece of fatty meat
Well, since my Empress Dowager has officially retired from her annual ritual of making those delectable "ham yok chung" ( the one with succulent bits of fat pork, chestnuts, mushrooms, dried oyster and salted eggyolk) , I now have to settle for less favourable versions by my aunts. Still, I count myself lucky as their "chungs" are still far superior if compared to those commercial ones. I guess my sneaky trick of having bought some pulut rice and mini bamboo leaves earlier this week and the silly pouting of lips early this morning has prompted loving Dowager to conjure up a bunch of "karn sui chung" (plain ones to be eaten with either caramel, kaya or just plain sugar) in a jiffy.
nyonya version
Perhaps more pouting is needed to get that nyonya ones that I've been craving for too.
Tonight's soooo gonna be a burping night for me.
"Happy Chung Chit" to all of you!
